Whenever I head out to explore the Columbia River Gorge, I almost always make a stop in Troutdale, Oregon. It’s one of my favorite spots, not just because it’s known as the official Gateway to the Gorge, but because it has the perfect mix of small-town charm, riverfront fun, and access to some of the most beautiful hikes in Oregon. And after a long day on the trail wrestling with “the Beagles”, a stop at Sugarpine Drive-In along the Sandy River is always the sweetest reward!
Small-Town Charm Meets Big Adventure
Troutdale’s downtown is full of character. Antique shops, art galleries, restaurants, and the historic Troutdale Depot Rail Museum give the area a nostalgic feel that’s easy to fall in love with. It’s walkable, relaxed, and the kind of place where you can slow down and enjoy the moment.
Families love Glenn Otto Park, where kids can splash in the Sandy River, play on the playground, or enjoy a riverside picnic. For an easy outdoor adventure, the Sandy River Delta offers wide, stroller- and dog-friendly trails that lead to the Maya Lin Bird Blind and gorgeous views of the Gorge. And just a few minutes up the road, you’ll find Multnomah Falls and the famous waterfall corridor.
